When a global financial client partnered with a major airline to turn the last 747 in a fleet into limited-edition credit cards, they needed a fitting tribute. How could we tell the story of how the Queen of the Skies had made its way into the hands of aviation fans?
The specificity of our target audience presented a huge opportunity. For them, the reclaimed airplane materials that made up the card weren’t just a curiosity—they were a tangible connection to aviation history. We knew we needed an experience that honored both the plane’s legacy and the Card Members’ passion.
We created an augmented reality (AR) experience that Card Members were able to access by scanning a QR code on a slip that arrived with their card. After placing a 3D rendering of the airplane into their environment using the viewport of their mobile phone or tablet, Card Members were able to click around the virtual plane to explore the history of the aircraft, read and listen to pilot stories, and start digging into their new benefits.
We designed the AR experience to feature a number of different interaction points that could provide insight into user behavior. But the most striking piece of data was that users wanted to stick around the experience—they stayed engaged for 37% longer than the industry benchmark.
